Extraction of Phenolic Acids from Plant Tissue Using Accelerated Solvent Extraction (ASE®)

چکیده

IntroductIon Polyphenols are a large family of metabolic compounds that occur naturally in a wide variety of plant foods. Recently, polyphenols have attracted a great deal of attention due to their roles as natural antioxidants. Antioxidants are believed to provide a protective effect against oxidative damage diseases such as cancer, coronary heart disease, and stroke. It has been estimated that there are approximately 8,000 naturally occurring phenolic compounds. Polyphenols can be classified into two major groups: (1) phenolic acids (PA) and (2) flavonoides. Because phenolic acids exist in multiple forms, the polarity of each PA can vary significantly. This has lead to difficulty in developing a uniform extraction method for different phenolic acids from varying matrices. ASE is an automated extraction technique that rapidly performs solvent extractions using high temperatures and pressure. The automation of ASE allows for high sample throughput and, if needed, fast method development. ASE is accepted by several government and regulatory agencies and produces solvent extracts with similar or better recoveries than traditional extraction techniques. This application note will focus on the extraction of phenolic acids from two different plants (eggplants and black cohosh) using ASE. The ASE results from five different eggplant samples are compared to eight different extraction techniques. Data from the extraction of black cohosh show the results of the optimum ASE conditions for this matrix, focusing on temperature and solvent choice. Effect of the Drying Process on the Intensification of Phenolic Compounds Recovery from Grape Pomace Using Accelerated Solvent Extraction

In light of their environmental and economic interests, food byproducts have been increasingly exploited and valorized for their richness in dietary fibers and antioxidants. Phenolic compounds are antioxidant bioactive molecules highly present in grape byproducts. Herein, the accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) of phenolic compounds from wet and dried grape pomace, at 45 °C, was conducted and ...

Extraction of Lipids and Polychlorinated Biphenyls from Fish Tissue in a Single Run Using Accelerated Solvent Extraction (ASE)

IntroductIon The presence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in fish and other marine organisms is of immediate environmental and regulatory concern. To determine the concentrations of PCBs indicative of contaminant exposure, and lipids, which also characterize physiological conditions of fish, the analytes must first be extracted. Traditionally, this has been done using Soxhlet methods that a...

Rapid Determination of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Using Accelerated Solvent Extraction (ASE)

INTRODUCTION The United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) has been implemented in an effort to combat the release of selected persistent organic pollutants (POPs). POPs are found in environmental samples such as soils, sludges, solid and semisolid waste, and sediments. POPs are also found in biological samples such as human breast milk, and fish tissue. UNEP is interested in eliminating POPs...

Analytical Method for Dioxin and Organo-Chlorinated Compounds: (II) Comparison of Extraction Methods of Dioxins from XAD-2 Adsorbent

Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), ultrasonic extraction (USE), and accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) were compared with the well known Soxhlet extraction for the extraction of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) from the XAD-2 resin which was used to adsorb PCDDs in the atmosphere. XAD-2 resin spiked with five PCDDs was chosen as a sample. The o...

Microwave-assisted extraction and accelerated solvent extraction with ethyl acetate-cyclohexane before determination of organochlorines in fish tissue by gas chromatography with electron-capture detection.

Focused open-vessel microwave-assisted extraction (FOV-MAE), closed-vessel microwave-assisted extraction (CV-MAE), and accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) were used for extraction before determination of organochlorine compounds (polychlorinated biphenyls, DDT, toxaphene, chlordane, hexachlorobenzene, hexachlorocyclohexanes, and dieldrin) in cod liver and fish fillets. Wet samples were extract...
